The Marijuana Carrier Woman Has Been Sentenced by a Judge of 6 Years and a fine of Rp.800 Million

Tabloid Nasional. The panel of judges at the Ambon District Court sentenced Meggy Tamaela (31) to a six-year prison sentence, the woman accused of carrying ten packages of marijuana from Sorong, West Papua who were arrested in Ambon City on June 11, 2018.

"Stating that the defendant legally and convincingly was found guilty of violating article 111 paragraph (1) Law number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics," said the Ambon District Court chief judge Hery Setyobudi accompanied by Lucky Rombot Kalalo and Esau Yarisetou as judge members, in Ambon , Thursday (11/22).

The defendant was also sentenced to pay a fine of Rp. 800 million, three months in prison.

The accused of being accused of imprisonment and fines for not supporting government programs in combating drug trafficking, while those who relied were defendants who were polite, had never been convicted, and had three children dependent.

The judges' decision was also lighter than the demands of the Maluku Prosecutor General Prosecutor, Ester Wattimuri, who in the previous trial asked the defendant to be sentenced to seven years in prison, a fine of Rp800 million, six months in prison.

The defendant was initially arrested by members of the Maluku Regional Police Directorate of Narcotics on June 11, 2018 in a boarding house in the Poka area, Teluk Ambon Sub-district.

"At that time the defendant had just arrived from Papua by riding a Motorbike Mount Dempo which docked at the Yos Sudarso Port of Ambon," he said.

The police then followed the defendant who was looking for a boarding house and got a room in a place in the Poka area at around 9:20 p.m.

The defendant was immediately asked by the police about the "goods" he brought from Papua and was immediately answered if one type of marijuana drug was temporarily stored in a backpack drawer he was carrying.

When the examination was conducted, it turned out that the 11 packages of dried marijuana brought by the defendant belonged to his colleague named Vanyo alias Valen who lived in Sorong, Papua.

The results of examination of the defendant's urine at Ambon Bhayangkara Hospital also showed Meggy positive amphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol and methamphetamine.

For this action, the defendant was snared in violation of article 111, juncto 114, juncto article 127 paragraph (1) letter A Law number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics.

The panel of judges adjourned the trial until next week with the agenda of listening to the defense of the defendant's legal counsel team, Hendrik Lusikoy and Robert Lesnussa from the Indonesian Maluku Legal Aid Foundation.
